September quarter 2006 to December quarter 2006 movements (in original terms) -

• Taxation revenue increased by 16.0% to $80,473m.
• The GFS net operating balance for the general government sector increased by $8,165m, to $7,831m.
• The GFS net lending(+)/borrowing(-) position for the general government sector increased by $6,429m from a net borrowing position of $1,725m to a net lending position of $4,704m.

• In seasonally adjusted chain volume terms, total general government final consumption expenditure decreased by 0.5% in December quarter 2006.
• General government gross fixed capital formation, in seasonally adjusted chain volume terms, increased by 11.0% in December quarter 2006.

DECEMBER QUARTER 2006 GFS RELEASE

This release presents quarterly government finance statistics (GFS) on an accrual accounting basis. All tables are presented in GFS operating statement format and are for the general government sector, with the exception of Table 2 which presents data for the public non-financial corporations sector.

Quarterly GFS are released for the current financial year only, other than in the September quarter, when the quarters of the previous financial year are presented. Users requiring data for earlier periods should consult Government Finance Statistics, Australia (cat.no. 5512.0). The latest issue (2004-05) was released on 29 March 2006. Final annual GFS results for 2005-06 are scheduled for release by the ABS on 3 April 2007.

Telstra data for the December quarter 2006 are included in Table 2 All levels of Government - Public Non-Financial Corporations of this publication.

As outlined in ABS cat. no. 8102.0, Future Treatment of Telstra in ABS Statistics 2007, the ABS considers that the effective date that Telstra moved from public sector to private sector was 20 November 2006. For the purposes of collecting and publishing statistics the ABS has made the pragmatic decision to continue to treat Telstra as a public sector unit up to and including 31 December 2006 (ie up to and including the December quarter 2006) and as a private sector unit subsequent to that (ie from the March quarter 2007).

FORTHCOMING ISSUES

The release of GFS quarterly data is coordinated to be the day before the respective issue of Australian National Accounts: National Income, Expenditure and Product (cat. no. 5206.0). The current release dates for the March quarter 2007 and June quarter 2007 issues are :
